Cooking Tips

How to speed avocado ripening:

Store them in a paper bag or wrap with newspaper.  For faster result, add an apple or a banana inside the bag. Check them by touching the ends; don’t rely on the avocado changing color.

How to prevent apples from browning:

Once you cut the apples, brush the pieces with lemon juice. Also you may place the apples in a bowl, filled with cold water, add cider vinegar or juice from any citrus fruit such as lemon, orange, or grapefruit. (Use 1/4 cup of juice from a citrus fruit per each 1 quart of water).

How to neutralize salty soups or stews:

Add one or two large raw potatoes (peeled), to the simmering stew, and let them absorb the salt for about 20-30 minutes. If after that time, the soup is still too salty, leave them cooking for a few more minutes. Remove the potatoes before serving your meal.

How to peel off garlic easily and faster:

Place garlic in a microwave oven for about 10 to 12 seconds and the skin will easily slip off the cloves.

How to tenderize beef and chicken:

For red meat, add wine when marinating. For chicken, add buttermilk when marinating.

Also, you may add 1 tbsp of vinegar to the water when boiling meats or ribs to tenderize them.

How to remove onion, garlic and fish odors from your hands:

Rub your hands on a stainless steel surface such as a spoon (this works better), or kitchen sink, etc., while keeping your hands under running cold water at the same time. Rinse and pat dry. (Don’t wash your hands with soap until after the odor is gone).  Another tip is to  rub your hands with salt.  You may also rub your hands with lemon juice or lemon peel. However, these last two may sting if you have scrapes and cuts on your hands.
